Scampers are a Failed Evolution of Infected, belonging in the Combat Abnormal tier (though, their entity class extends them to the Evolved tier). They are slow, nearsighted melee combatants and a key component of progression, responsible for the creation of Mounds.
Spawning
Has a 10% chance to Evolve from an Infected (excluding Infected Scientists) when it obtains at least 1 Evolution Point and its 5 minute Evolution timer expires. Once it does, it may Evolve into a Scamper instead of its normal Evolution possibilities.
Evolution
Upon obtaining at least 7 Evolution Points and its 10 minute age timer expires, it will Evolve into a Gastgeber. Additionally, when Linked, Scampers have a 30% chance to Evolve into a Gastgeber when their 10 minute age timer expires, regardless of how many Evolution Points they have.
Unique Behavior
Upon a Scamper existing, a 10 minute 'age timer' will begin. Once it expires, the Scamper will disappear in a burst of smoke and spawn 1 to 3 Mounds. One Mound is guaranteed to spawn and have a maximum Age of 4. Additionally, 1 to 2 additional Mounds will spawn with a maximum Age between 1 to 3. Furthermore, when a Scamper transforms, it will spawn a Scent and place Human Remains where it exploded.
Have a chance to place a Mycelium Infection II for 10 seconds area effect cloud when hitting other mobs.
Scampers are completely ignored by the Despawning System.
Variants
Scampers have two Variants (excluding normal Scampers), a Scamper's Variant depending on which Infected the Scamper Evolved from.
Drowned Scampers Evolve from Infected Drowned. They are aquatic; they can breathe underwater and swim fast in liquids.
Villageroid Scampers Evolve from Infected Villagers, Infected Diseased Villagers, Infected Wandering Traders, Infected Witches, and Infected Pillagers. They are capable of opening Wooden Doors if in the way in order to pathfind.
Behavior
Scampers are hostile to most non-Spore mobs, with the exceptions being Animals and Fish (unless Should attack Animals is enabled via the Config) and mobs included in the Mobs Not Targeted blacklist within the Config.

Trivia
The Drowned Scamper and Villageroid Scamper are suggested Variants, coming from the mind of @godeaterthealien in the Spore Asylum Discord server.
Despite being classified as Combat Abnormal, the entity class of the Scamper extends it to the Evolved tier (same goes for the Gastgeber), meaning its basic behavior is identical to Evolved.
The idle growls of Scampers are voiced by BigXplosion (the main sound designer for Spore).
