Infected are the simplest mobs in the game. They are also likely the first mobs you'll encounter, considering they start the infection to begin with. They all share similar aspects in terms of models and capabilities. Most of them will spawn naturally in your world in the darkness. Every humanoid mob in the game (excluding the Zombie Villager and Illusioner) has an infected form, and they will convert others. There is a total of nine mobs in this tier.
Infected Mobs
Spawning
Spawned when a mob dies with Mycelium Infection, converting them into their Infected form.
Spawns naturally in the dark, usually in caves or during night.
Spawned from Scents.
Spawned from a Howler's summoning ability.
Spawned from Arena Tendrils during the first and second waves of a raid.
(Infected Scientist and Infected Adventurer exclusive:) Spawn naturally in laboratory structures and spawned from naturally placed monster spawners in laboratory structures (Hospital, Permafrost Mining Outpost, and Groundzero structures.)
Evolution
All Infected have the ability to evolve. If they can't currently, they have planned Evolved forms for the future. The following mobs turn into the following Evolved:
Infected Human - Knight, Griefer, Braiomil, and Phayres
Infected Husk - Verdathorn, Jagdhund and Scavenger
Infected Villager/Wandering Trader - Leaper, Slasher, and Spitter
Infected Pillager - Howler, Stalker, and Brute
Unique Mechanics
Starvation
Every Infected mob can fall victim to starvation. Starvation is a mechanic exclusive to Infected. As soon as they spawn in, a 5 minute starvation timer starts. If they haven't gotten at least one kill point by then, they will receive the Starvation effect, which slowly damages them until they perish. If Infected are afflicted by the cold, they will starve twice as fast. However, this mechanic can be countered. If the Infected is within 1 block of a Human Remains or a Biomass Bulb, the Infected will consume it to reset the starvation timer. If the Infected receives Regeneration or Instant Health, the starvation timer will also be reset. This doesn't remove the Starvation effect itself but stops the timer, so Starvation won't get reapplied. Therefore, if the healing is strong enough and the Infected is high enough in health, it will survive. When consuming Human Remains, the Infected will be given one evolution point. For Biomass Bulbs, it gives one kill point.
Upon death, for any block within 0.5 blocks of the Infected upon dying that also has an air block above it, there is a 90% chance of placing either a Small or Big Mycelium Growth. There is an additional 30% chance that a Human Remains block is placed, with no cap, meaning it's possible for more than one Human Remains to be placed.
Shared Aspects & Capabilities
Infected will attack mobs with Infected forms, golems, and most hostile mobs.
Infected mobs inflict Mycelium Infection for 30 seconds when dealing melee damage.
All mobs have a 5% chance to drop a Scent upon death.
Infected will attempt to group together in hordes.
Infected will follow Evolved and Hyper Evolved mobs.
Can perform low leaps/dashes to chase prey quickly through water.
Able to use kill points to give themselves buffs, such as strength or speed if the target is running away. They can also give themselves regeneration if they are low on health.
Capable of breaking glass and leaves.
Can be a maximum of 60 Infected in a world at any given time, managed by the despawning system.
Present a weakness to the cold, like all spore mobs.
Trivia
If the config option for spore mobs to not attack mobs is turned off, Infected will have a 30% chance to spawn with the needed evolution points to evolve.
This is because of the Fear Nightfall modpack, which contains spore and has said config option disabled. People complained about the spore's slow development, so this feature was added.
Some Infected, such as the Infected Human, have a torso made up of many cuboids. This is because the creator wanted their stomach to expand with the amount of kills they had. This was scrapped, but some of the models kept the detailed torso.
There's a noticeable pattern in the eyes of Infected, with undead-Infected having black sclera and villager-Infected having a white sclera, but the Infected Wandering Trader breaks this pattern by having a black sclera.
